Japanese Diplomat urges UN intervention on SFP4

Willacy interviews Japanese nuclear professor Hiroaki Koide, US energy policy adviser Robert Alvarez, TEPCO spokesman Yoshimi Hitosugi, undercover journalist Tomohiko Suzuki and most importantly retired diplomat to Switzerland, Misuhei Murata.

Murata states he has written to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon, urging international intervention to save the world from another bigger nuclear catastrophe of the spent fuel pool at Unit 4 failing and releasing huge extra amounts of deadly radiation.

No technology exists to bring the Fukushima disaster to a satisfactory conclusion, and the cause of the meltdown is still not known.  It’s more likely earthquake magnitude 9 made meltdowns to start rather than tsunami according to Mr. Goto, nuclear designer. (Refer to my article on Feb. 18, 2012 UN & IAEA encourage Japan to restart nuclear)  However Tepco and the group of nuclear power including the government never seem wanting to admit it officially.  Mr. Koide, nuclear engineer (refer to my article on Feb 22, 2012 The Truth About Nuclear Power) mentioned "The reason why is that if they do they won’t be able to restart other nuclear power stations because all of them are standing on the possible earthquake active zone."  Also there is no way to prevent from unexpected things such as terrorist attacks, etc.   Therefore the public is not convinced it's safe to restart nuclear power even if Prime Minister Noda said so.  Without finding out the real cause of meltdowns, nobody knows how to prevent meltdowns when the next big earthquake/Tsunami or any other kind of environmental disasters happen.   Mr. Koide also mentioned that Fukushima has demonstrated that merely passing a stress test cannot guarantee that a reactor will be safe in the event of an unimaginable disaster.  

Kepco have admitted that they need to restart the Oi Nuclear power plants in order to save the company economically, not because there is a shortage of electricity, although Prime Minister Noda said in a recent speech when he announced of restarting Oi nuclear power plants that Japan needs to restart its nuclear power plants in order to provide sufficient electricity for the country’s needs.  Monopolized power companies have been allowed to charge high rates for many years. The rates are calculated based on the amount of capital tied up in the business, which includes nuclear power station buildings and other facilities, spent fuels, uranium, etc.  More nuclear means more profit, which makes the companies reluctant to use other ways to generate electricity.  According to Japanese government statistics, half the thermal power stations have been closed because of this. There are nine electric power companies in Japan, and Kepco is the one that relies on nuclear the most.
Prime Minister Noda also mentioned that meltdown would never be happening again whatever happens.  How could he say it for sure?  In fact Kepco hasn’t applied appropriate safe measures.  There is no vent with radioactive filter attached, and there is no earthquake-proof building which could serve as a command centre in an emergency.  Kepco says they will build these within four years and raise the breakwater within two years.  Also several earthquake specialists have suggested that the area might be an active fault zone.  Furthermore, no appropriate disaster-prevention measures have been applied to the area within a 30 – km radius of the plant. 
Most of Japanese people are really having enough of those false safety statements.  There have been demonstrations in front of the Prime Minister’s residential office in Tokyo on every Friday evening since March.  It’s getting bigger and bigger - 11,000 people on 15/6 and 45,000 people on 22/6.  Yet no major media and TV don’t report it except Tokyo newspaper, Akahata shimbun and one of late night Asahi news TV program.  NHK which is equivalent to BBC never reports it because it’s sponsor, electric companies don’t want them to do.  Kepco, the owner is restarting the Oi Nuclear power plants on this coming Sunday (1/7/12).  So this coming Friday demonstration is set to be even bigger.  Also similar style of demonstration is happening  in front of Kepco in Osaka-city in the west of Japan as well.

Voices from Fukushima evacuees:  "There are no safety guarantees for nuclear plants. If they are really concerned about their livelihoods, moves should be made toward eliminating all nuclear plants."  “There should never be another case of an 'unexpected' accident." Ms. Mie Shimura now lives in temporary housing in Fukushima city after having moved several times after the nuclear accident. She said the hardest thing to deal with was not knowing how long she would have to evacuate.  “I may not be able to return to Futaba while I am still living," she said. "I wonder if it is all right to resume operations. I don't want anyone else to go through what I have."……..
Among those who have tried to conserve electricity as a means of moving away from nuclear energy, anger and disappointment were the prime emotions triggered by the decision to restart two reactors at the Oi plant: "The government wasted an excellent opportunity," said Teisuke Suzuki, who operates a "kamaboko" (fish paste) company in Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture. …….Suzuki's company reduced electricity usage last summer by 25 percent and is seeking a similar level this year.  "While there are risks from not operating the plants, I feel the risks of an accident are much greater," Suzuki said……
Another group has been urging consumers to switch to more energy-efficient fluorescent lighting as well as asking businesses to review their lighting measures:  "The government should have called for greater electricity conservation measures rather than resume operations so I am disappointed," said Akiko Yoshida, a member of the group. "But I do not think the trend toward energy conservation will change."…..
Other groups have been pushing petition drives for local referendums on nuclear energy:  Tomoko Matsumoto, 48, of Akishima in western Tokyo, joined such a group because she regretted not showing a greater interest in electricity usage and the communities that host nuclear plants before the Great East Japan Earthquake and Fukushima nuclear accident.  "There is a huge gap between public opinion in which more people are opposed to resumption of operations and the decision made by the government," she said. "I did not want just a few people to make such an important decision."

This citizen’s demo is for citizens and by citizens.  They have been doing this demonstration in front of the Prime Minister’s official residence every Friday at 18:00-20:00 since this April.  Everybody is welcome. Women's "Die-In" against the Restart of Ooi Nuke Plant (Jun/07/2012)

One of the reasons why I set up this blog is to be more aware of what’s happening in the nuclear world.  We need more transparent information and to reeducate ourselves about the danger of radiation.  Under occupancy from American Army after Hiroshima/Nagasaki bomb attacks when the world war II ended, bombs victims and the doctors who had seen them were forced to keep quiet about their experiences. (Refer to my article - A group focused on learning more about the effects of internal radiation on 28/5/12) So it’s really great to hear Fukushima women’s message - beautiful, courageous and powerful.

On June 7^th, 2012, about 70 women including 10 women from Fukushima did a “die-in” in front of the Prime Minister’s Official Residence to protest against the restarting of Ohi Nuclear Power Plant.  Before the die-in, 10 Fukushima women visited the Cabinet office and met with officials to submit a letter of request addressed to Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda.  Here are some of their words:
*After the Fukushima disaster, vast areas of Fukushima prefecture have been contaminated with high-level of radiation.  The condition of the accident site are yet to be stabilized and the radiation leakage still continues.  We hear that the safety measures at the Ohi nuclear power plants are worse even than crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant……...
*It’s a great agony to live in a contaminated area.  I lost hope to live.  But to tell everyone about this agony xxx now, I’m trying to live for the purpose.  I don’t want anyone to go through what I’m going through.
*Did anyone take the responsibility for the TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power accident?  Who did it?  I don’t think anyone did. When I heard Prime Minister Noda said “I will restart nuclear power plants on my responsibility”, I’ve realized that he is living in a different world.  I couldn’t understand what he was saying at all…….

*I wanted to raise my children with safest possible meals, so I started organic farming.  But all

of paddies and fields have been contaminated.  Everyday, every time I prepare a meal, I wonder if it’s OK to feed my children with certain-becquerel vebetables.  I’m worried if they might affect my children in the future.  Can you understand this feeling?  How many times have you come to Fukushima?  How much of that contaminated air have you breathed in?  How many times Mr. Noda come? …. We are there every day, and every time we see helicopters flying over us, we really fear something might be wrong with a nuke plant again.  That’s how it is in Fukushima.  I don’t think he understands this reality at all.  If he does, he can’t talk about restarting Ohi nuke plants.  Why doesn’t he try to understand?  Why doesn’t he come and see Fukushima?  Prime ministry Noda is said to be a leader of this country, but he is inhuman and I can never forgive him.  I think he is wrong.  Please tell him so……
*Ever since then, worrying about my children occupied my mind, so I cannot listen to music….. In late June last year, I started to suffer from various health problems one after another.  The problems are the exactly the same as those found in the villages around Chernobyl……(Babies, young children are the most vulnerable.  Also radiation affects adults, too.  Different people get affected in a different way. Mia June). We were already exposed to a critical amount of radiation when the levels were high.  In addition, now we are forced to be exposed to radiation internally every day……..It’s a sin to start Ohi nuclear plant without preparation!  And if an accident occurs, that will heap a sin upon sin!  Fukushima demonstrates it.  Please tell him so.
*While listening to these women from Fukushima, didn’t you think they are wonderful?  During the past year, women in Fukushima relearned everything.  Everything since the beginning of human history.  We relearned how foolish humans are.  How we have always fought each other.  How we dug out the worst thing, thing called “Uranium”, and how we started to use it.  We have learned those things more than scientists.  We are risking our lives, really……
*I had one daughter who had a baby in late January last year and then that the accident occurred.  We thought we had to flee and tried to figure out the way to do so in confusion.  But in those early days in Fukushima, there was no gasoline, no public transportation.  Shinkansen (bullet train) had stopped.  The airport had stopped its operation.  There were no means for us to evacuate.  (Japanese government only evacuated the citizens who lived in 20km radios of the plant. Mia June)…….So we were compelled to decide to be exposed to radiation at home……..My highest priority is to protect children.  If you have money to spend on decontamination, please use it for evacuating children in the first place.
*We are living in fear.  Please imagine, for example, you can’t dry your washing and bedding gear outside.  You can’t take a deep breath.  I have grandchildren, but I can’t invite them to Fukushima, my city of Koriyama because the high radiation level.   And in the meantime, swimming classes at school are starting soon.  A lot of radioactive things have stuck to the walls of the swimming pool, concrete walls.  A little scrubbing won’t remove it.  A lot of cesium has accumulated at the bottom floor.  Water itself is scary.  We are exposed to radiation day by day.  Particularly children are at higher risk.  I think you already know how dangerous radiation is.  Please know more about Fukushima!  If you do, you will even begin to think about restarting.  Please address this issue as a human being.
*Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, where are you looking at?  What are you looking at when you decide your policies?  You are not looking at us at all.  You put economy first.  You are such a shallow prime minister who tries to restart Ohi nuclear plant with a shallow word “It’s safe.” I can’t forgive you.  You said “The ultimate responsibility rests with me.”  What do you mean by it?  Does it only mean giving the go ahead?  How are you going to take responsibility after that?  Can you say you are willing to face life sentence if anything goes wrong?  I think you are an extremely insincere prime minister…….
