Dear all,

Thank you all for visiting, reading and sharing the news with me on the Fukushima Appeal Blog. I’ve kept it running since February 2012. Unfortunately, I will need some break now to attend to some of my health issues.

I would like to thank this blog and its supporters for giving me an opportunity to become a part of the slowly awakening global community during this very important time of global change. I had zero knowledge of nuclear before the Fukushima disaster, and was and still am a just normal citizen. It’s been hard to see Japan becoming a criminal, immoral and authoritarian country since the Fukushima Disaster. So it’s been a huge awakening and healing process to have a platform to speak out instead of feeling powerless, angry and sad about it. With the new secret law that is going to be introduced in Japan soon, Japanese people will need more help than at any other time in its history from foreign bloggers, doctors and scientists. Please remember Fukushima. I hope that the more difficulties we may encounter, the stronger and connected we will become to fight against injustice and be able to act from our heart space. (Mia)

Is Nuclear really CO2 Free?

These diagrams show, carbon dioxide emissions in Japan are increasing despite more and more nuclear energy being generated (54 reactors in last 45 years).  Also they show that co2 emission decreased in Germany, Denmark, and Sweden.  Those countries have been developing technologies of alternative energy without relying on building new nuclear power stations for global warming issue.

http://www.47news.jp/47topics/e/218274.php

Natural uranium contains only 0.7% of Uranium 235which is used as a nuclear power fuel, so it has to go through a long process of mining, refining, transporting, concentrating, and making it into pellets.  Storing and keeping the spent fuel rods  cool for so many years , and using very large thick concrete walls for building the nuclear power stations – all of these processes rely on other energy sources unless there is another nuclear power station nearby (and there usually isn’t.).   Strictly speaking it doesn’t produce CO2 only when electricity is generated. No country has yet developed an effective way of dealing with nuclear waste.  Japan has the best gas turbine  technology  (using methane=city gas as fuel so it doesn’t produce much CO2) in the world.
Before the Fukushima disasternuclear power produced 25% of Japan’s electricity.  While nuclear was being used, half of the thermal power stations were
closed.  At the moment they are going to rely on gas or oil powered thermal power stations for a while.    I think that using more gas turbine systems to keep CO2 emissions low could buy some time to develop alternative ways of generating electricity, for example using geothermal energy sources.  There are so many hot springs places throughout Japan.

Severely malformed babies have been killed in Japan.

There was a report (as of Nov. 17, 2012) no. of newborn babies between last April and June decreased 25% in Fukushima Prefecture.  They said that reason why was that mothers moved to safer places to protect their babies.  It might well be true, but we don’t think that wasn’t the only case.  We bet some mothers stayed because they wouldn’t have got any financial support from the government.   We hope they are all right.  One of the reason why we don’t hear the report of malformed babies could be this:  Please refer to this video.

Almost one year has passed since the disaster, but radioactive contamination is still spreading

After several explosions at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in March last year, areas in and around Fukushima equivalent to twice the size of the county of Devon in the UK became radiation control areas. (areas exposed to 0.6μSV/ or more per hour, which those under 18 years of age are not normally allowed to enter and where special clothing must be worn to protect the body from radiation exposure).   Eighty thousand people were evacuated from an area 20 km in radius around the Fukushima plant, but the population of Fukushima prefecture is 2 million, and even Fukushima city, 50 km away, is no longer safe for young children.  It is obvious how many people are still trapped in radiation control areas.  Families whose children are exhibiting symptoms such as nosebleeds and diarrhea have been trying to evacuate with little support from the government. So far only 36,000 people including children managed to evacuate outside Fukushima prefecture voluntarily,  but the rest are forced to stay, keeping their children indoors most of the time.
Since the disaster 4 reactors have been continuously leaking the ionized radiation into the environment.  We are also very concerned about ionized radiation spreading well into the Kanto area, where Tokyo is.  We have heard reports that more and more hotspots have been found in various places in the east of Japan including Tokyo. (hotspots are small areas where radioactive accumulated in rainwater and sludge in puddles, gutters, waste-water purifying plants, etc.  Forest areas are also high in ionized radiation, especially in fallen leaves, wet soil, plants, grasses, and wild vegetables such as mushrooms.  Besides this, the incineration of radioactive debris without proper filters is taking place in other areas, contributing more and more to spreading ionized radiation to the rest of Japan.
Recently we heard that Tokyo station has become a hotspot because so many passengers from affected areas including Fukushima pass through it, carrying the ionized radiation on their shoes.  The station is linked by an extensive system of underground passageways to surrounding commercial buildings and shopping centres, which means that contamination simply continues to accumulate.
Radioactive contamination in the food is another big issue in Japan.  Various reports says that people are eating radioactive food in Japan because some of the food in the market are unchecked, and also the “safety limits” are so unrealistically high.
It feels painful to report these things, but at the same time it feels important to let the rest of the world know what is happening in Japan.  Once radiation is released into the environment, it doesn’t disappear.  We can only move it somewhere else and wait for the life of each radioactive element to halve and halve till it eventually it becomes harmless, and in some cases this would take a billion years.  If a person ingests radioactive material, they continue to be exposed to internal radiation, damaging cells inside their body, until the material leaves their body.  Radiation affects not only humans but all living things from viruses and bacteria, to plants and flowers, insects and birds and all animals.
People say that here in UK, we are safe because we have no earthquakes or tsunamis, but the Chernobyl disaster was caused by human error, and a nuclear plant could also be targeted by terrorists.  As long as nuclear plants exist, the next accident could happen in anywhere in the world – in fact, many small nuclear accidents have already happened and the most likely continue to happen.  Besides this, nuclear plants (especially reprocessing plants) damage our environment even without any accidents.  The question of how we can reduce CO2 emissions, is important of course, but isn’t it even more important to address the issue of avoiding nuclear disasters, because once such a disaster has happened, it is impossible to turn the clock back.

Feb. 2012 Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant news

The Fukushima disaster is far from over. 4 reactors have been continuously leaking the radiation into the environment since March 11 last year. There are over 100,000 tons of highly toxic radioactive water is left in the site. 3 reactors had meltdown. Because of very high radiation level near those reactors, no human can get near to them, that means they can only guess where had the melted fuel gone and in what shape. Reactor 4 is the most worrying, especially since series of size 4 magnitude earthquakes happened at the beginning of this year.
Higher radiation was detected around that time. Now it’s in the middle of winter we hear news about leaking pipes that were erupted by the frozen weather. (Feb. 5, 2012)
