Dear all,

Thank you all for visiting, reading and sharing the news with me on the Fukushima Appeal Blog. I’ve kept it running since February 2012. Unfortunately, I will need some break now to attend to some of my health issues.

I would like to thank this blog and its supporters for giving me an opportunity to become a part of the slowly awakening global community during this very important time of global change. I had zero knowledge of nuclear before the Fukushima disaster, and was and still am a just normal citizen. It’s been hard to see Japan becoming a criminal, immoral and authoritarian country since the Fukushima Disaster. So it’s been a huge awakening and healing process to have a platform to speak out instead of feeling powerless, angry and sad about it. With the new secret law that is going to be introduced in Japan soon, Japanese people will need more help than at any other time in its history from foreign bloggers, doctors and scientists. Please remember Fukushima. I hope that the more difficulties we may encounter, the stronger and connected we will become to fight against injustice and be able to act from our heart space. (Mia)

The Fukushima Collective Evacuation Trial For the Right to Education in a Safe Place

What’s happening to Fukushima children?
You can help them as a jury.  Here is how:

Take action to help children in Fukushima whose lives are now in danger!-->World Citizens' Tribunal
It is a privilege to be able to lend personal support to the Fukushima Evacuate Children Lawsuit. There is no better measure of the moral health of a society than how it treats the most vulnerable people within it, and none or more vulnerable, or more precious, than children who are the victims of unconscionable actions. For Japan, and for all of us, this is a test that we must not fail. (Noam Chomsky 12 Jan. 2012)

Waste issue halts US Nuclear Reactor Licensing

http://www.landercountynwop.com/news.htm
August 10: Waste Issue Halts U.S. Nuclear Reactor Licensing - ATLANTA, Georgia, Aug 9 2012 (IPS) - The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which oversees commercial nuclear power enterprises, has halted the issuance of all new nuclear reactor licensing decisions after a court ruling citing the failure of industry and government to identify an acceptable solution for the long-term storage of nuclear waste. Nineteen final reactor licensing decisions are affected, including nine Construction and Operating Licenses (COLS), eight license renewals, one operating license, and one early site permit.

Nowhere in the world has a solution for nuclear waste, including Japan. Reformist former government official Mr. Shigeaki Koga commented in the TV program that the Japanese government’s nuclear policy is more than several 10 years out of date, with no acceptable solution for the long-term storage of nuclear waste.  Even though the danger posed by Reactor 4’s spent fuel was pointed out after the Fukushima disaster, the government only talks about restarting the nuclear power stations because of electricity shortages.

Nuclear power hard to justify in cheap gas world: GE via Reuters

http://lucian.uchicago.edu/blogs/atomicage/2012/07/30/nuclear-power-hard-to-justify-in-cheap-gas-world-ge-via-reuters/
(Reuters) – Nuclear power has become hard to justify as the shale gas revolution creates an abundance of natural gas that makes it the fuel of choice to back up renewable, the chief executive of General Electric told the Financial Times on Monday.
A sharp rise in shale gas production in North America in the past five years has pulled U.S. natural gas prices down close to 10-year lows and could turn the country into a gas exporter soon.
Large conventional offshore gas findings in Europe and Africa in the past two years, vast existing reserves in Russia and Central Asia and increasing production in Australia also mean gas is abundant elsewhere as well.
At the same time, nuclear power has come under pressure following the meltdown at Japan’s Fukushima reactor during the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, with countries such as Germany and Switzerland pulling out of nuclear power generation.
“They’re finding more gas all the time. It’s just hard to justify nuclear. Gas is so cheap and at some point, economics rule,” the newspaper quoted GE CEO Jeff Immelt as saying in an interview on Monday.

Radioactive threat looms in Kakadu in Australia

http://www.smh.com.au/environment/radioactive-threat-looms-in-kakadu-20110415-1dhvw.html
THE operator of the Ranger uranium mine expects to take drastic action to prevent radioactive water spilling into an Aboriginal community and Kakadu's World Heritage-listed wetlands.
More than 10 billion liters of highly contaminated water is trapped on the mine site 230 kilometres south-east of Darwin after near-record rainfalls.
Energy Resources of Australia, which is controlled by Rio Tinto, will be forced to pump water from the almost over-flowing dam into its operating open-cut mine known as Pit 3 if the Kakadu area receives about 100 millimetres more rain. With three weeks of the Top End's wet season remaining, more rain is likely.
This would delay for months, possibly years, the resumption of high-grade ore extraction in the pit that ERA relies on to supply 10 per cent of the world's uranium……
For 30 years about 100,000 litres of contaminated water a day has been leaking from the tailings dam into fissures beneath Kakadu but an 18-month review completed last year failed to establish where the water had gone or whether it would damage the environment in the future.
The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast showers and storms in the area over the next couple of days and unpredictable wet season weather for several weeks. Since ERA announced an initial three-month suspension of production at Ranger in January, the company's shares have fallen 45 per cent to $6.58 a share, a loss in value of $1 billion.
The crisis has thrown into doubt ERA's plans to expand its operation to include an underground mine and the use of a controversial acid heap leach processing technique to process low-grade ore.
The Ranger mine has had more than 150 leaks, spills and mishaps since it opened despite opposition from Kakadu's traditional owners in 1981.
Yvonne Margarula, a Mirarr senior traditional leader, said last week that her people were ''deeply saddened'' that uranium from their land at Ranger had been exported to Japanese nuclear power companies, including the one operating the stricken Fukushima plant.
This week the ERA chairman, David Klingner, publicly ruled out his company agreeing to give up the Jabiluka mineral lease, which contains known high-grade reserves of uranium worth more than $18 billion.

The biological impacts of the Fukushima nuclear accident on the pale grass blue butterfly

http://www.nature.com/srep/2012/120809/srep00570/full/srep00570.html
The collapse of the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant caused a massive release of radioactive materials to the environment. A prompt and reliable system for evaluating the biological impacts of this accident on animals has not been available. Here we show that the accident caused physiological and genetic damage to the pale grass blue Zizeeria maha, a common lycaenid butterfly in Japan...............
Adult butterflies collected in September 2011 showed more severe abnormalities than those collected in May. Similar abnormalities were experimentally reproduced in individuals from a non-contaminated area by external and internal low-dose exposures. We conclude that artificial radionuclide from the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant caused physiological and genetic damage to this species.

Unheard voices from high school girls in Fukushima

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=2VVIknv8bDw
Three high school girls in Soma-city, 40km from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear power plant, had been getting together every day after school since a year after the disaster to talk about the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear explosion, and to share their experiences of the disaster.  Through this process, they came to understand each others’ pain, suffering and confusion.  They had been feeling so much pressure and frustration about pretending that everything was ok under the government’s false safety campaign, and they wrote this video script based on their own feelings, thoughts and experiences.  They’ve been worrying about their future, especially after one of their friend committed suicide:  They might develop cancer later.  How long can they live?  Is it really ok to have a baby?  They are like any other teenagers, complex and sensitive, yet courageous enough to be able to express themselves to a larger audience.  If you could have listened to them, you would have understood what it is like for them to live in the high radiation zone in Fukushima.
Although the video has been erased, I decided to post the video and information anyway because I would like everyone to know how often this kind of thing has been happening in Japan.
The Fukushima local government including the Education committee seems intent only on restoring the local economy, refusing to accept the radiation dangers and ignoring the voices of citizens and children who want to express their real feelings of fear,, frustration and stress over the series of misleading safety campaigns by the government, media, scientists and education boards, who are all in thrall to the power of the nuclear industry.  I received the following e-mail from the owner of the website which had up loaded this video: http://kaleido11.blog111.fc2.com/blog-entry-1382.html
“The video might have been erased by the local education committee in Fukushima by putting pressure on the girls once they found out I had uploaded it to my website.  This kind of thing has been happening very often in Fukushima where the authorities have been doing their best to suppress any anti-nuclear movement.  There is even a feeling among ordinary citizens of not even wanting to hear the word ‘radiation’.  I am worried that the girls and their parents might be feeling ostracized for their bravery in standing out from the crowd….”
I feel sorry to hear that such an environment has been created in Fukushima.  It must be very hard for everybody to live in such a heavily radioactively contaminated area, whether they are aware of the dangers or not.  I hope this total injustice only serves to make some brave citizens more aware and even more determined to keep on standing up against injustice.  I would also like to pray sincerely for the voice of every single person who bravely expresses their feelings and asserts their right to live as a human being.

Tepco released video of emergency TV meeting “99.3% cut off, 1665 beep sounds, 29 image concealment” by Fukushima diary

http://fukushima-diary.com/2012/08/tepco-released-the-video-of-emergency-tv-meeting-99-3-cut-off-1665-beep-sounds-29-image-concealment/

Tepco released the video of emergency TV meeting held on 3/11 ~ 15/2011, but it was full of concealment as expected.
These were recorded at Tepco’s head office and Fukushima Daini, the full length is 150 hours, but the part recorded in Fukushima Daini doesn’t have audio data.
Tepco edited it to make it only 1 hour, the video of 149 hours was cut off. (99.3%) They also added beep sounds 1665 times and concealed the image 29 times. It’s to protect their privacy supposedly………

145 Lawyers Supporting Citizens’ Right to Express their Opinions Freely

Former Chairman of the Japan Feeration of Bar Associations Mr. Utsunomiya and others recently handed the government a protest note with 145 lawyers’ signatures on it, demanding that the steel barricade erected between the road and the pavement near the Prime Minister’s residential office in Tokyo be removed.  The note condemns the tight control by the police, saying that it infringes citizens’ right to express their opinions freely, and warning that the barricade is unsafe and likely to lead to accidents.

36 Percent Of Fukushima Children Have Abnormal Thyroid Growths And Doctors Are In The Dark

36 percent of Fukushima children have abnormal thyroid growths likely from radiation exposure, based on the "Fukushima Prefecture Health Management Survey."
Australian pediatrician Dr. Helen Caldicott's comment on this news:

1. "It is extremely rare to find cysts and thyroid nodules in children."
2. "This is an extremely large number of abnormalities to find in children."
3. "You would not expect abnormalities to appear so early — within the first year or so — therefore one can assume that they must have received a high dose of [radiation]."
4. "It is impossible to know, from what [officials in Japan] are saying, what these lesions are."

Dr. Caldicott explained that the high rate of abnormal growths in Fukushima children is very unusual — it usually takes five to 7 years to see what the medical implications of radiation are — and insisted that the international medical community become involved. ……. Thyroid nodules are relatively common, they are not as common in children and some of them could become cancerous.
….Dr. Calidcott noted that Japanese officials are not sharing ultrasound results with foremost experts of thyroid nodules in children and accused the media of "practicing psychic numbing," saying that she doesn't understand why media outlets are choosing to ignore the nuclear fallout.
