On August 26, 2012, an
interview with Dr. Yamashita was published in two Japanese newspapers, the
Tokyo Shinbun and the mainichi Shinbun.
Here is his last comment :
“I would like to work towards avoiding an economic breakup in Japan. In the Ukraine, the huge compensation awarded to Chernobyl victims for the damage to their health threatened the national budget, and if the same thing happened in Japan, its citizens would be the ones who would suffer the most.”
Coming from a doctor and was appointed as an radiation advisor for people in Fukushima, this is highly irresponsible comment. I think the government’s nuclear policies need to be reviewed instead of expecting to give all the burden to citizens to pay through high electricity bills and tax payment. Dr. Yamashita seems to have forgotten about the huge amounts of money the government has been spending to save Tepco while failing to protect disaster victims, including vulnerble children. He is the one who campaigned around Fukushima prefecture, saying that it was safe for children to play outside as much as they wanted; with the result that many children were exposed unnecessarily to high levels of radiation.
