“The ultimate aim of Fukushima Network is to protect children from radiation.
So we do everything we can do to achieve our goal.
The network encourages the individuals who can act on their own initiative.
I learned the importance of recuperation from the newsletters published by the Chernobyl Children's Funds.  The donation from the Chernobyl children’s Funds have been used for recuperation programs.
I also knew that children who have had their thyroid removed need to take hormones for the rest of their lives.  In Chernobyl recuperation was the way to protect children's health …those activities have been assisted financially by the governments.
I evacuated from Fukushima with my family and helped to evacuate other families.  Now I'm aware that no. of family evacuating is decreasing.  So my hope is that we can arrange short recuperation programs for the children.  So that they can keep the internal exposure to radiation low.

“They started to recuperation program in May.  Once we started, we have gradually learned that if you reach out for help people would support and welcome us.”

“We also got to know other evacuees in host areas who accept the newcomers.  Among the evacuees, some children who were evacuated for the summer had remained in the host city and had started a new life there after the summer vacation ended.  So people who could evacuate were already doing so during the summer. Then those who missed the summer time couldn't move until the school semester finished.”

“In March 2012, when the school semester finished, there was another wave of recuperation participants.  Although it is true that the radiation level goes back to the same value as before, when they return home after recuperation, it is still possible to excrete radioactive elements and strengthen immune system while they are in recuperation.”

“I call this idea biological half-lifeIt is the cycle which the amount of radiation in the body gets reduced as the person stays outside of the contaminated areas.

Q: So you had knowledge that the biological half-life of radioactive elements is shorter for children than adults.

Mr. Yoshino: “I was certain that recuperation programs would play an important role

“Initial activity was focused on helping evacuation of family in Fukushima prefecture, later it shifted to short term recuperation programs.

In the evening of March 15, 2011, 24uSv/h was recorded in Fukushima city.  It didn't go away for a little while.  During March, the radiation level had been 2-3uSv/h.

Rather, by introducing the word, ‘recuperation’, we wanted to encourage the parents to keep using the programs for their children.”
