Why is groundwater the problem ?  fukushima-diary
Posted by Mochizuki on August 30th, 2013

International media came back to Fukushima. It’s because of the sea contamination issue. Like I explained before, the main source of sea contamination is the groundwater. Why they can’t stop it and what are they doing ? I would like to explain before the next bus comes.
1. What makes groundwater the problem ?
Since before they built Fukushima nuclear plant, tones of groundwater went through the potential plant area to the sea. Now everything that touched Fukushima plant gets contaminated. Groundwater is not the exception.

2. How are they treating it ?
A part of the groundwater flows into the plant buildings. It is collected and kept in the tanks, everyday. The rest of water is flowing to the sea. Some of it is stopped by the wall, but because it nearly caused flooding in the plant area, now it’s pumped up and stocked in the tanks too. This is why Tepco needs the infinite amount of the tanks.

3. Is there any way to stop it ?
The answer is No. There is no technology. Now Tepco is planning three countermeasures. One is to pump up the water upstream before contaminated, they say and the second is to freeze water before contaminated, they say. The third is to purify the stocked water to discharge to the sea.

However the first one would gather more groundwater, so it’s meaningless. The second one has never been tested for the feasibility. About the third one, the purifying facilities got disordered in the test operation for unknown reason.

I don’t want you to be angry at me saying this. This is the reality whoever explains it.
