Documentary on the
repercussions of nuclear waste
transport through highly populated areas
Every
week trains carrying radioactive nuclear waste travel from all over the UK to
Sellafield. With the advent of new reactors there will more trains carrying of
raw nuclear fuel and waste of much higher levels of radiation. And these pass
close to where you live. Sue Fairbanks follows the route from the Southwest to
Sellafield…
Reprocessing
plant produces huge amount of radioactive gas and solid waste that contaminate
the Irish Sea, and the radioactivity comes back to the land. Some says nuclear power stations will help to
combat global warming. But there is no
evidence that is a case. Actual carbon dioxide footprint of nuclear
industry is huge. If you take it back to
the basic steps of first mining uranium, converting uranium into fuel, using
fuel in reactors and treating fuel in backend in Sellafield. It has huge carbon footprint.
Petition: No
Nuclear Dump in the Lake District
Description
On 30th January 2013 Cumbria County Council
will vote on whether or not our beautiful county becomes the world's biggest
nuclear dump.
In desperation at declining industry and limited employment prospects, West Cumbria has volunteered our county for consideration. Due to sensitivity of the subject and high risks involved, the government is only able to consider locations offered by councils on a voluntary basis. Allerdale and Copeland are the only counties in the whole of the country to have done so. Therefore the government is forced into finding a location for the dump in Cumbria- despite it's unsuitability for the purpose.
In the 90s the government conducted a thorough investigation of the suitability of Cumbria as a location for long term storage for medium to high level radioactive waste. The NIREX report concluded that the geology was not sound and would risk radioactive contamination of our groundwater.
THE ONLY WAY WE CAN STOP THIS IS TO CONVINCE CUMBRIA COUNTY COUNCIL TO WITHDRAW IT'S OFFER.
They will not do this unless we put pressure on them and let them know we will not allow them to turn our homeland into a toxic wasteland. Time is limited. We need to do this NOW.
The plan is to raise awareness (many people are still unaware this is even happening), rally support and create an event which will show the county council we are opposed to their plans.
