“There were 44,000 people evacuated to Kiev and there are now only 19,000 people still remaining.  None made it much passed 40 years old….3.2 million with health effects and this includes 1 million children…”

“I found they all needed help because they had lost beliefs in themselves. It has helped the victims in Pripyat to write their own stories and send them to the victims in Fukushima since the accident in 2011.”

I attended the meeting.  JAN UK organized it very well.  After Tamara’s speech we all sang Katyusha(カチューシャ） in Russian and Japanese.  The event was well attended.  By the time Tamara and JAN exchanged presents, the room was filled with love, support and warmth to each other.  I was particularly moved by her words, saying it took over 20 years for her to recover from the shock and distrust towards manipulation created by the Russian government and Nuclear power company and to be able to come out from it and speak out in the public about the situation the victims including her had to go through after the accident.  She didn’t understand English so we couldn’t talk, but I found her very sincere person, and felt my heart very open when we gave a hug to each other.  I am not a victim of the disaster but in a way I am because some of my family members still live in Fukushima-city.  So it was very healing to know somebody who understands devastation that Nuclear energy could bring to us but also being able to come out strong and still be able to hold beautiful heart to share with others.

“Fukushima” was not the only, not the first ‘level 7’ nuclear accident. On 26 April 1988, Chernobyl in Ukraine also had a disastrous nuclear accident. More than 100,000 residents had to evacuate. Japan may need to learn the lesson from Chernobyl in order to minimize the health damage of the people, and the UK may need to learn the lesson to avoid the accident before it happens.
