Dr. Alexey Yablokov is from the Russian Academy of Sciences. He and his
team published “Chernobyl Consequences of the Catastrophe for People and the
Environment” New
York Science of the Academy in 2010.
Recently a Japanese translation of this book was published. Dr. Alexey Yablokov
had visited Japan in May and giving
several lectures in different cities. I
hope many people attended his lectures.
Dr. Alexey Yablokov [A Lesson from Chrnobyl]
アレクセイ・ヤブロコフ博士「チェルノブイリの教訓」
Qoute by Dr Yablokov from video
“I studied the consequences of the Chernobyl
disaster. After 25-26 years I now have a real data. What
this means, is that all people who live in the area up to 1 curie/Km2
(=37,000Bq/m2, more than 1mSv/y in terms of atmospheric dose) will have some
negative health effects.
This health risk is greater for people who
live in the area up to 5 curie/Km2 (=185,000Bq/m2). It is very important for us to think and
discuss the problem of how we can minimize the consequences of the Fukushima
disaster.”
(Editor’s note)
According to a contamination map published in September 2011 - the
eastern half of Fukushima prefecture, South of Miyagi prefecture and some
places in Kanto area, were over 1
curie/Km2.
Some places in Fukushima prefecture were over 5 curie/km2. I
haven’t come across a recent official survey map of accumulated contamination.
However, Mrs. Hisako Sakiyama, a member of Fukushima Nuclear Accident
Independent Investigation commission showed a new contamination map at New York
Symposium in this March.
According to the map, Mrs. Hisako Sakiyama showed the residents of Tohoku,
Kanto and Chubu regions (which are up to 250km radius of Fukushima Daiichi
Nuclear Power Plant) have been exposed to ionizing radiation of more than 1mSv/y.
The total amount of population in these areas
are about half of the whole population of Japan. This is a very worrying situation, yet most people in Japan are not
aware of the true extent of this alarming news.
(Abstract, typescript: a speech by Mr. Alexey Yablokov at Anti-Nuclear
Power World Congress in Tokyo on 15-16th of December, 2012)
“Nuclear specialists put the blame on
“radiation phobia”.. But this is not a real radiation illness. If that’s so, why did we find the same
disorders and mutations in frogs, swallows and field mice and pine trees?”
Mr. Alexey Yablokov also mentioned that he found that radiation causes,
not only developing cancers, but also affects different parts of the body.
“Radiation
caused Disorders of blood and circulation system, endocrine system, immune
system, respiratory system, reproductive system, skeletal system and central
nervous system.
Even small doses of radiation will have an effect on those systems
during several years of exposure. We have strong evidence from the Chernobyl
disaster there is a change to the brain; it’s difficult to prove but radiation
has damaged the brain.
Not only cataracts but also other problems in the eyes, digestive system
disorders, and congenital malformation of babies.” 1000 cases of like these…
“Another Chernobyl catastrophe concerns premature aging. Children became
look like older people. Also mutation is very important. It may be a key to understand
about the level of radiation in each person. We can now count the level of mutation in the
blood. ”
(Editor’s note)
Mr. Alexey Yablokov commented that we could count the level of mutation in the blood. This may be a real reason why the Japanese
government stopped the “
gene blood test”
on young couples and their newborn babies from the Fukushima
prefecture who had been exposed to radiation after the nuclear disaster. Surely if they have gone ahead with it, the
nuclear industries would have found its results inconvenient for further
promotion of the nuclear business.
An Environment
Ministry statement read, “We will examine the problems with the proposed
testing program and decide on our next course of action.” I wonder what is
meant by this; I have heard that chromosomal testing using blood samples
from children under 18 had started in Namie-machi on 29th of
January, 2013. Hirosaki University has been involved in this test.
The results will be ready around the end of July because it’s going to
take at least 6 months for the results to be ready.
Even before the test
results, they have already said that this test would help Fukushima residents
to feel more assured that they don’t need to worry about the danger of
being exposed to low dose ionizing radiation. With all the manipulation
they have done so far to downplay the effect of the Fukushima fallout, we need
to keep asking for transparency from the authorities (Fukushima Radiation
Health Risk Team and the Ministry of Environment).
