Dear all,

Thank you all for visiting, reading and sharing the news with me on the Fukushima Appeal Blog. I’ve kept it running since February 2012. Unfortunately, I will need some break now to attend to some of my health issues.

I would like to thank this blog and its supporters for giving me an opportunity to become a part of the slowly awakening global community during this very important time of global change. I had zero knowledge of nuclear before the Fukushima disaster, and was and still am a just normal citizen. It’s been hard to see Japan becoming a criminal, immoral and authoritarian country since the Fukushima Disaster. So it’s been a huge awakening and healing process to have a platform to speak out instead of feeling powerless, angry and sad about it. With the new secret law that is going to be introduced in Japan soon, Japanese people will need more help than at any other time in its history from foreign bloggers, doctors and scientists. Please remember Fukushima. I hope that the more difficulties we may encounter, the stronger and connected we will become to fight against injustice and be able to act from our heart space. (Mia)

ANTI-NUCLEAR DEMO on 15/6/12, 11,000 people demonstrated in front of the Prime Minister’s Office in Tokyo against the restarting of nuclear power in Japan

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCr6rMpvDic
Sai Kado Hantai! Stop restarting!

The Japanese government is planning to restart the Ohi nuclear power station in Fukui Prefecture soon,, despite 80% of Japanese citizens being against restarting nuclear power.  Prime minister Noda mentioned in his recent speech in the public that Japan needs nuclear power because there would not be enough electricity without it.  However various reports have indicated that's not true..  He also said that restarting the nuclear power station will safeguard people’s everyday lives when he leaves citizens to live in the high radiation areas, not protecting Fukushima disaster victims, especially the children..

Media blackout: None of the main media including TV and newspapers in Japan reported this demonstration.  NNN and NHK did, but said that there were only 400 demonstrators, not the true figure of 11,000.

What is the United States Government Waiting for? By Akio Matsumura June 11. 2012

http://akiomatsumura.com/2012/06/what-is-the-united-states-government-waiting-for.html

Former UN member Mr. Matsumura and former Swiss ambassador Murata gave an urgent request to Mr. Fujimura, chief Cabinet Secretary to convey their message to Prime Minister Noda before his departure for Washington to meet with President Obama on April 30.  Mr. Matsumura commented in his above website that he was greatly disappointed that the idea of an independent assessment team and international technical support for the disaster were not mentioned publicly.   He also said that he was astonished to hear that many Japanese political leaders were not aware of the potential global catastrophe because they were not told anything about it by TEPCO.  He wonders why the Japanese political leaders would think it appropriate to depend on one source …….. As a result of this myopia, Japans leadership lacks a clear picture of the situation and has little idea where it is steering its country and people. ………………………………
Due to the pressure by the public and media, the government of Japan sent Mr. Goshi Hosono, Minister of the Environment and Nuclear Power Policy, to Reactor 4 on May 26.  He spent half an hour on a temporary staircase at the site.  Surprisingly, he said the structure supporting the pool appeared sound.  Minister Hosono also said at the press meeting that Reactor 4 could stand a Magnitude-6 earthquake.  I dont understand why he said this. We are warning that Japanese geologists predict that a 90% probability M-7 earthquake will be hitting Japan within three years……………………..
Mr. Matsumura also mentioned that Prime Minister Noda, the sixth premier in the past five years, does not have the political power to make a decision to request the Independent Assessment team and the international technical support teams outside of TEPCO……….
Mr. Matsumura went to Washington DC to talk to Spent-Fuel Pools Expert Robert Alvarez who says [85 times greater Cesium-137 at Fukushima than at Chernobyl accident] .  He told him that Japan will not take the first step; its leadership does not have the power to act first and survive politically, and does not have the courage to take the first step without thinking of the second.

Fukushima Residents Call for Criminal Charges Against Nuclear Officials

TOKYO (CNN) — The executives of the Japanese utility that owns the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant and a number of the country’s government officials should go to jail, according to a complaint filed by more than 1,000 local residents on Monday.
A total of 1,324 people lodged the unusual criminal complaint with the Fukushima prosecutor’s office, naming Tsunehisa Katsumata, the chairman of Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) and 32 others.
The complaint argues that the 33 TEPCO executives and government officials are responsible for causing the nuclear disaster that followed the March 11 earthquake and tsunami and exposing the people of Fukushima to radiation.
A spokesman for TEPCO said the company had not received the complaint yet and therefore couldn’t immediately comment on the matter.
The Fukushima prosecutor’s office will assess the complaint and decide whether it will bring criminal charges against the 33 people it names.
“The Fukushima nuclear accident is the worst corporate crime in Japan’s history and caused significant damage to the life, health and assets of the people of Fukushima and the rest of Japan,” the group said on its website, dubbed the Plaintiffs Against the Fukushima Nuclear Plant.
The written complaint, filed with the Fukushima District Public Prosecutors Office, also named former TEPCO president Masataka Shimizu
The written complaint says the officials failed to prepare for the disaster, despite the number of earthquakes in Japan and the threat of a tsunami to Fukushima.
They also say the delay of data on the spread of radiation from the System for Prediction of Environmental Emergency Dose Information, or SPEEDI, caused further exposure of the community to radiation. The complaint accuses the executives and government officials of professional negligence resulting in death and injury.
“We lost our homeland, filled with beautiful nature, and our irreplaceable community. We shoulder the heavy burden of a divided local community and we are sitting in the midst of a suffering which shall never end,” said the group.

APPEAL FOR A NUCLEAR MORATORIUM IN JAPAN AND FOR THE IMMEDIATE REMOVAL OF NUCLEAR FUEL FROM THE FUKUSHIMA PLANT

Petition: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dDFxc2tkeldaNTFzTDhjYmpySzg4cXc6MQ
This appeal aims to break through the wall of silence outside Japan that surrounds the catastrophe in Fukushima. The present Japanese government, guided by Prime Minister Noda, has de facto retreated from the desire expressed by his predecessor after the catastrophe to lead the country away from its dependence on nuclear energy, but among the public the debate is strong and opposition to nuclear energy is on the rise.
On an international level we are led to believe the accidents were trifling, that the situation is under control and the consequences for the Japanese population are minimal.
But the situation is totally different:
- in the three reactors in operation at the moment the accident occurred, the quantity of molten fuel -- which leaked from the vessel in unit 1 -- is greater than that of all previous accidents, and is completely uncontrollable. To state that "cold shutdown" has been achieved in the damaged reactors is senseless, inasmuch as that definition refers only to a core which is intact, while it turns out that the cores of units 1, 2, and 3 are partially or totally molten, with such a loss of control parameters that it cannot be excluded that they might achieve criticality configurations and locally uncontrolled chain reactions.
- The situation in the spent fuel pools has not been set right, and with repeated tremors of considerable intensity there is the risk that a new accident might be brought about with extremely grave and unforeseeable consequences, also because the fuel rods have been stored in higher-density racks. A group of experts from the Japanese Cabinet Office holds it likely that in the next few years an earthquake of magnitude 9 may occur in the ocean fault line and a tsunami with exceptionally high waves could strike not only the Fukushima utility but many others, too.
- The situation in the north-east region of the country is still extremely worrying: the seriousness of the radioactive contamination, regarding which the Japanese authorities from the outset implemented a cover-up operation, is showing no signs of abating; thousands have been uprooted from their homeland forever (including those transferred -- some on their own initiative -- from the polluted zone of Fukushima), have lost their livelihoods and prospects for the future, and live in distressing uncertainty.

- The Japanese government, however, has minimised the seriousness of the contamination, has raised the limit of contamination for children, and shown itself to be much more worried about restoring apparent normality rather than safeguarding the health of its citizens.
- On May 5th the last of the 50 commercially-operating nuclear reactors in Japan was idled for its periodical inspection (which this year includes tests and adjustments as a result of the Fukushima accidents) without compromising the supply of electrical energy to the country. Now a decisive contest is about to take place because, faced with the government and the nuclear industry's desire to reactivate the plants as soon as possible, a strong opposition on the part of the citizens is rising up.

We hold that these issues do not regard only Japan, but the whole international community, so we demand the Japanese authorities:
- do not reactivate the currently idled nuclear reactors;
- intervene urgently to remove the fuel rods from the seriously-damaged pools and transfer them elsewhere;
- make immediate, even if belated, provisions for the evacuation of children from the contaminated zones;
- foster the institution of an international, interdisciplinary authority, under the aegis of the UN, to provide a solution to the situation in Fukushima, given the incapacity demonstrated by TEPCO to deal with the incident.

The government and nuclear power group are trying to restart Oi nuclear power plant in Fukui prefecture on the Japan Sea with a reason they claim that there would be a shortage of electricity otherwise.  However there is an official report which says only 4% would not be enough at the peak during hot summer if Kansai electric company buys it from the other regions which would be easily done if they wanted.  Japanese people managed to save 15% of electricity last summer.  So it won’t be that difficult for them to save 4%.  (Mia June)

The Nobel Prize-winning novelist, Kenzaburo .Oe speaks at anti-nuclear rally to gather 10 million signatures

80% of whole population is against restarting nuclear power stations.  There are various demonstration is happening in Japan.  One of them is the group called “Goodbye to Nuclear Power Plants”.  It has so far collected 7.22 million signatures, which it plans to hand the prime minister’s office in the middle of this month. For scale, Tokyo, which nearly 10 percent of all Japanese call home, has a population of 13 million. A previous rally in September drew 60,000 participants, according to organizers.

Mr. Kenzaburo Oe speaks at their gathering:  “Nuclear energy is fundamentally mistaken. Even if it offers some success, when we look at it in the big picture it can only lead to damage and to our fall. I think that’s the lesson that we Japanese as a whole have come to realize."

The petition comes just as the Noda administration is calling for a nuclear restart:
