Dear all,

Thank you all for visiting, reading and sharing the news with me on the Fukushima Appeal Blog. I’ve kept it running since February 2012. Unfortunately, I will need some break now to attend to some of my health issues.

I would like to thank this blog and its supporters for giving me an opportunity to become a part of the slowly awakening global community during this very important time of global change. I had zero knowledge of nuclear before the Fukushima disaster, and was and still am a just normal citizen. It’s been hard to see Japan becoming a criminal, immoral and authoritarian country since the Fukushima Disaster. So it’s been a huge awakening and healing process to have a platform to speak out instead of feeling powerless, angry and sad about it. With the new secret law that is going to be introduced in Japan soon, Japanese people will need more help than at any other time in its history from foreign bloggers, doctors and scientists. Please remember Fukushima. I hope that the more difficulties we may encounter, the stronger and connected we will become to fight against injustice and be able to act from our heart space. (Mia)

Fukushima nuclear reactor 3 in “cold shutdown” but boiling!

BBC: It’s boiling somewhere inside Fukushima Unit No. 3 — Reactor supposed to be in cold shutdown — Situation ‘worrying’ http://enenews.com/bbc-boiling-inside-fukushima-unit-3-reactors-supposed-be-cold-shutdown-situation-worrying
Title: Fukushima nuclear plant: Japan takes steps over sea leak

[...]  (Tepco) said steam was seen around the fifth floor of the building housing Reactor No 3 [...]
It is not clear what is causing the steam [...]
The sight of steam rising is worrying because it means somewhere inside the reactor building water is boiling, says the BBC’s Rupert Wingfield-Hayes in Tokyo.
Th badly damaged reactors are supposed to be in what is called “cold shutdown”; the temperature of the cooling water inside the reactor should be well below boiling point.
It is another sign that Tepco still does not fully know what is going on inside the damaged reactors [...]

Fukushima steps up children's thyroid recheck

Fukushima Prefecture has taken steps to facilitate the re-examination of children found with lumps in their thyroid glands following the 2011 nuclear crisis.
Only one hospital had been conducting the re-examination in the prefecture in northeastern Japan.
The prefectural government has added 2 more hospitals to carry out the examinations. One started work on Wednesday and examined 5 children. The other is to follow on Friday.
Prefectural officials took the step because only one-third of the children requiring re-examination have been able to undergo the procedure.
Fukushima is conducting regular checks of the thyroid glands of 360,000 people who were 18 or younger when the nuclear crisis began.
That's out of concern that radioactive materials emitted by the damaged reactors could accumulate in children's thyroids, possibly causing cancer.
Children found with a lump 5.1 millimeters or larger are supposed to undergo a thorough recheck. That includes an ultrasound examination and blood and urine tests.

The re-examination is taking time. As of the end of March, only one-third of about 1,100 children had been re-examined.
A doctor involved in the examinations expressed hope that the expanded program will help residents feel more at ease over their health.

Jul. 24, 2013 - Updated 10:23 UTC
(Editor's note) It sounded like they appear to be doing something but unless they take longer time to examine the children, they won't be able detect cysts as much as they meant to detect.

WEDNESDAY 24 JULY 2013   Japanese researchers say the cost of cleaning up from the Fukushima nuclear disaster could top $50bn (£32.6bn), more than four times the amount allocated by the government.
The figure does not include compensation for those affected by the explosion and the subsequent fallout, or the multibillion-dollar price tag for decommissioning the Fukushima Daiichi plant, which the
government and regulators say will take at least 40 years to complete…….. Read more »

Bloggers and Journalists, time to fight back against oppression

UNESCO extends its call for proposals: Research on the Safety of Online Media Actors Doing Journalism

UNESCO launches a call for research proposals in order to produce a qualitative picture of cases around the world linked to guaranteeing the safety of journalists using digital media. The research will analyse the role of governments, intergovernmental organizations, civil society and the media in the protection of online media actors. It will also provide guidelines, good practices and policy recommendations on how to respect the right to freedom of expression in the digital environment.
Interested researchers and organizations are invited to submit their proposals by 31 July 2013.

Parallel to unprecedented diffusion of online media and digital communication worldwide, there is a worrying trend that websites of news media, human rights organizations, critical bloggers, and other individuals or organizations disseminating information have increasingly become targets of illegitimate surveillance, hacking and attacks from various sources ranging from State-based actors to third parties.
More extremely, some media actors are being killed for their online journalism. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists out of 50 of those journalists who were killed in the first part 2012, a total of 17 were online journalists. In turn, Reporters without Borders has registered the killing of 39 netizens and citizen journalists by late 2012.
The UN Human Rights Committee in its general comment No. 34 has defined journalism as “a function shared by a wide range of actors, including professional full-time reporters and analysts, as well as bloggers and others who engage in forms of self-publication in print, on the Internet or elsewhere.” The term “journalists” in this envisaged research includes, therefore, all online media actors who do journalism while not ignoring differences amongst them.
UNESCO is concerned about the online safety of journalists and its significant human rights implication, particularly on freedom of expression and related privacy protection. This research fits within the Organization’s on-going efforts to implement  the UN Inter-Agency Plan on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity. At the same time, it is clear that there is only limited information available about the extent of online threats and the digital safety literacy of journalists. To that end, UNESCO perceives a need to collect more information on the safety situation of online journalists across the globe.
UNESCO, therefore, invites interested researchers and organizations to submit their proposals, according to the Terms of Reference, by email to Ms Xianhong Hu, before noon (CET), 31 July 2013. Proposals have to include detailed description of the research methodology, deliverables, timeline and requested funding.

Fukushima – Science Media Centres and their part in corrupting truth.

I would like to bring to your attention the mechanism by which science journalism is being undermined.. It may explain George Monbiot`s conversion to the nuclear industry among other things. This mechanism is the Science Media Centers of the world and the nuclear industry driven PR machine

There is growing evidence that the existence of SMCs is also encouraging news organizations to downgrade science reporters. Recently the newspaper The Australian sacked its science reporter, Leigh Dayton. The reason she was given by the editors was..
they could rely on the supply of press releases from the Australian SMC so that their general reporters could write the science news”.
A large empirical study carried out recently by Andy Williams of Cardiff University, UK also confirmed that..
"Science PR was increasing and independent science journalism was decreasing."

Plutonium from Sellafield in all children's teeth

(Source) http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2003/nov/30/greenpolitics.health?CMP=twt_gu
"Although UK Government said risk is "minute", they admitted Sellafield plant is the source of contamination."
, public affairs editor
The Observer,
Radioactive pollution from the Sellafield nuclear plant in Cumbria has led to children's teeth across Britain being contaminated with plutonium.
The Government has admitted for the first time that Sellafield 'is a source of plutonium contamination' across the country. Public Health Minister Melanie Johnson has revealed that a study funded by the Department of Health discovered that the closer a child lived to Sellafield, the higher the levels of plutonium found in their teeth.
Johnson said: 'Analysis indicated that concentrations of plutonium... decreased with increasing distance from the west Cumbrian coast and its Sellafield nuclear fuel reprocessing plant - suggesting this plant is a source of plutonium contamination in the wider population.'
Johnson claimed the levels of plutonium are so minute that there is no health risk to the public. But this is disputed by scientists, MPs and environmental campaigners who have called for an immediate inquiry into how one of the world's most dangerous materials has been allowed to continue to contaminate children's teeth. There have long been claims of clusters of childhood leukaemia around Sellafield.

In the late 1990s researchers collected more than 3,000 molars extracted from young teenagers across the country during dental treatment and analysed them. To their surprise they found traces of plutonium in all the teeth including those from children in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Alarmingly, they discovered that those living closer to Sellafield had more than twice the amount of those living 140 miles away.
Plutonium is a man-made radioactive material and the only source of it in Britain is from Sellafield. The plant, which reprocesses nuclear fuel from reactors, still discharges plutonium into the Irish Sea.
The original research was carried out in 1997 by Professor Nick Priest who was working for the UK Atomic Energy Authority. At the time the conclusions of the research received little attention because the study concluded that the contamination levels were so minuscule they were thought to pose an 'insignificant' health risk.
But earlier this year the Committee Examining Radiation Risks from Internal Emitters, looking at health risks posed by radioactive materials, examined Priest's study. Some of the committee's members have now cast doubt on the conclusions that plutonium in children's teeth posed no health risk.
Professor Eric Wright, of Dundee University Medical School, is one of the country's leading experts on blood disorders and a member of the committee. He believes that the tiny specks of plutonium in children's teeth caused by Sellafield radioactive pollution might lead to some people falling ill with cancer.
He said: 'There are genuine concerns that the risks from internal emitters of radiation are more hazardous [than previously thought]. The real question is by how much. Is it two or three times more risky... or more than a hundred? ...............
